First Sample Lesson

Today's post is all about designing a sample English lesson to teach students how to write a descriptive paragraph. This lesson is designed to be taught in a blended format.
First, we should think of our learners' needs and the need of integrating technology to facilitate learning.
After that, decide on the learning objectives and what do you expect students to be able to do at the end of the lesson.
The learning objectives of this lesson are based on Bloom's taxonomy cognitive domain.

Students will be able to :

  •  Describe the physical/Outer appearance of a person. (Level 2: understand)
  • Use the simple present tense. ( Level 3: application)
  • Use adjectives to describe a person. (Level 3:application)
  • Differentiate between adjectives, nouns, and verbs. (Level 4: analyze)
  • Students will choose their favorite character from a video game and describe it physically. (Level6: creation)

Technological tools used are Edpuzzle for students to watch a video on describing peoples' physical appearance and answering three embedded questions with feedback on each answer to ensure students' understanding. Quizlet is used to remind students about the difference between nouns, adjectives, and verbs in the form of flashcards. It has a set of activities that target the reading, writing, and listening skills and a match game to recall the difference.

Remember that it is important to introduce the technological tools as websites, apps, or platforms used during the lesson, set rules, and train students on using them. Also, make sure that all your students have access to an internet connection and have any device at home to do their online activities.

The assessment used at the end of the lesson is based on students' preferences. I tried to relate the activity to what students love in an attempt to use the language in their daily life context, especially that they are acquiring English as a second language.
